The dental hygienist specializes in the prevention and treatment of gum related dental diseases. Healthy gums are tight around the teeth and do not bleed during brushing. Inflammation of the gums is mainly caused by the presence of dental plaque: a substance of bacteria, food particles and saliva. If plaque is present in the mouth for a longer period of time, it will harden and tartar will be formed. Good oral hygiene is important to prevent inflammation of the gums. Good oral hygiene consists of proper brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and keeping the spaces between the teeth clean at least once a day by using toothpicks and/or dental floss.
In the presence of gum infections, the dental hygienist will assist you in cleaning and provide you with preventive information with regard to keeping your teeth clean.
